Outdoor play and learning (OPAL)

At Adisham, we believe that every child deserves the opportunity to play, explore, create and thrive. Through our commitment to the OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning) programme, we are transforming playtimes so that they become a rich and valuable part of every child’s school day.

Just as we work hard to ensure that every child can succeed in the classroom, we want every child to feel valued, included and able to flourish during playtime too.

What is OPAL?

Children spend around 20% of their primary school life at playtime. The OPAL programme is a nationally recognised school improvement programme that helps schools create high-quality, inclusive play opportunities for all children.

OPAL recognises that play is not simply a break from learning, it is an essential part of childhood. Through play, children develop social skills, confidence, resilience, creativity, communication and problem-solving skills.

By improving the quality of play opportunities available, schools can support children’s wellbeing, relationships and learning throughout the day.

Play and inclusion go hand-in-hand

Children have different interests, strengths and ways of engaging with the world around them. Some children enjoy energetic physical play, while others prefer imaginative role play, creative activities, construction, exploration, nature, social interaction or quieter spaces.

Through OPAL, we are creating an environment where:

  • Every child can find something they enjoy.
  • Every child feels a sense of belonging.
  • Every child can experience success.
  • Every child can build friendships and confidence.
  • Every child has access to meaningful play opportunities.


This reflects our commitment to ensuring that all children, including those with SEND, additional needs or vulnerabilities, are fully included in school life.

What does OPAL look like at Adisham?

Rather than a playground focused on a limited range of activities, OPAL helps us create a variety of opportunities for children to explore and enjoy.

Children may be:

  • Building and creating with loose parts.
  • Working together to solve problems.
  • Playing imaginatively with friends.
  • Exploring natural materials.
  • Taking part in active physical play.
  • Creating dens and shelters.
  • Engaging in sensory experiences.
  • Enjoying quieter spaces for conversation and relaxation.

The beauty of OPAL is that there is no single “right” way to play. Children are encouraged to be creative, collaborative and independent while developing important life skills.
